Roel advises and litigates on the clearance, protection, exploitation and maintenance of intellectual property rights, as well as IP-led commercial contracts such as licensing and distribution agreements, in a variety of industry sectors. However his focus is firmly on fast-moving new digital media and he has built up particular expertise in online trademark and copyright litigation, domain name disputes, data protection and the protection of knowhow, and work relating to such fields as ecommerce and social media.
As befits a man who builds his own computers, Roel’s grasp of intellectual property and technology law is built upon an unusually deep knowledge of the technology itself. Unsurprisingly, he had contemplated a career in the high-tech sector before his interest turned towards law. Since qualifying into a major IP department, he has acted for many world-leading brands in areas like fashion and beauty, travel, food and drink, and sports, as well as information technology, telecoms and media and entertainment.
Equally happy assisting with the IP aspects of a major corporate disposal, a complex piece of trademark litigation between luxury fashion brands, or a major sports sponsorship agreement, to give just three recent examples, Roel regularly attracts attention for his technical expertise and ability to get to grips with enormous volumes of detailed information. This latter skill was particularly in demand in a massive data protection dispute involving the analysis of thousands of pages of email evidence, which he recently helped to bring to a successful conclusion.
