Martin is a dedicated data protection and privacy lawyer whose experience spans a wide range of IT, commercial and media law. Equally at home in the technology, retail, telecoms, gaming and media sectors, he has developed particular experience in helping companies to monitor and evaluate changes in data privacy, technology and ecommerce law, and establish and implement data handling policies and practices. This includes helping companies to comply with GDPR regulations and handle investigations by the Dutch Data Protection Authority. However, Martin’s expertise and understanding of business processes are such that he can come in at any stage of the product lifecycle and add value – for example as part of a product development team ensuring that ‘privacy by design’ is built into today’s highly connected devices.
Martin gained this knowledge during the course of a career that has seen him occupy senior positions as a number of blue chip companies. After qualifying at Allen & Overy, he spent four years as Senior Legal Counsel at leading telematics, navigation and consumer electronics company, TomTom, followed by another four years as Senior Legal Counsel with responsibility for Global Data Privacy and ecommerce at major fashion retailer G-Star RAW. There, among other things, he project managed the acquisition of 50 stores across three countries in Asia and set up a new GDPR privacy compliance tool. Martin has also worked at telecoms giant KPN and at Talpa Media, where he advised on the syndication of the TV format behind “The Voice”.
His time in-house has also given Martin an instinctive understanding of his clients’ needs. Pragmatic by nature, he enjoys solving problems and cutting through the irrelevant details to produce workable solutions that really add value. This might mean, for example, reducing the burdens of GDPR compliance by project managing everything from the initial gap analysis through to liaising with regulators and implementing risk control processes. Or it could involve advising on complex cloud computing contracts, IT outsourcing or licensing models.
Whatever the issue, though, Martin is appreciated by his clients as a dedicated advisor prepared to put in the hours to understand their businesses, get involved and give clear, practical guidance.
