Anna is a commercial contracts, IP and media specialist with a focus on distribution, franchise and agency agreements. She advises both national and international clients across a broad range of sectors, helping them structure, negotiate and optimise their commercial relationships.

Anna supports clients in both contentious and non-contentious matters. She represents clients in complex commercial disputes, and also guides them through contract drafting, risk management and strategic deal-making. She thinks proactively alongside her clients and enjoys acting as a trusted legal advisor: someone who understands not only the legal framework, but also the commercial drivers and internal dynamics at play.

Experience
Anna began her legal career in 2004 at the global law firm Allen & Overy. Subsequently, she worked at various firms with a strong focus on media-related matters and on distribution, franchise and agency. Anna also has experience in-house at a digital media company in the music industry (FUGA), where she advised the management team on a broad range of legal matters. In January 2026 Anna joined Leeway as counsel.

Education
Anna graduated from the University of Amsterdam in 2004 and studied at the Sorbonne (Paris 1) and at New York University School of Law (US).

Anna is a member of the Dutch Association for Distribution, Franchise and Agency Law, the Association for Media- and communication law and the Association for Copyright law.

Anna van Essen has registered the following principal (and secondary) legal practice areas in the Netherlands Bar’s register of legal practice areas (rechtsgebiedenregister):

• Contract law (agency and distribution)
• Intellectual Property law

Based on this registration, she is required to obtain ten training credits per calendar year in each registered principal legal practice area in accordance with the standards set by the Netherlands Bar.
